One of the great things about kitchen remodeling is that you can normally create and execute a project that is either as large or as small as you want it to be. Whether you have a huge budget, or just a few extra bucks to spend on changing up the look of your kitchen, it is possible to start making the kitchen that you have always dreamed of. In fact, remodeling your home or kitchen in stages is a great way to steadily transform your home and kitchen without breaking the bank or causing extensive disruption to your home.
That being said, make a basic plan for your entire remodel, so that you are always doing things in a very logical order. Doing things in the wrong order could lead to wasted time and money. For example, you will want to replace cabinets and appliances before you replace the flooring, and new sinks after you replace countertops.
Low-Budget Makeovers
One of the easiest ways to make a huge impact in your kitchen is with a little paint. When choosing a paint, make sure to get a semi gloss latex paint, so that you are able to clean any messes quickly and easily with just a quick wipe down. A semi gloss is also the logical choice for baseboards, windows and doors for these same reasons. When prepping your kitchen for painting, make sure that you are thorough.
Because a kitchen can accumulate extensive (and often unseen) grease and grime, make sure that everything is heavily cleaned before you start painting. Wash walls and ceilings with trisodium phosphate to make sure that your surfaces are clean and ready to go. Having clean surfaces will help ensure that your paint adheres to all walls and ceilings properly.
Another great and inexpensive way to update your kitchen is through organization. A clean and organized kitchen makes an impact of its own, and you can buy a variety of organizers for relatively little money. This includes lid holders, shelving, pot racks, pullout trays, canisters and utensil crocks. These will help you avoid and control clutter to give your kitchen a neat, clean and organized feeling at all times.
Mid-Budget Makeovers
After you have taken care of paint and organization, one of the next logical steps is lighting. Consider options such as bright halogen floods, which use a low amount of electricity and gives you the lighting that you need. To increase their versatility, install a dimmer switch so that you can keep light at the right level at all times.
For a great looking effect, and to help reduce the shadows under your cabinets, install under-cabinet lighting. These lights not only improve the effectiveness of your workspaces, but also create a great effect when lit in the dark.
With a little careful planning and some elbow grease, you can take your boring, dated kitchen and turn it into the kitchen of your dreams. By starting with these low and mid-budget kitchen projects, you can pave the way toward some of the more advanced updates such as cabinets, appliances, flooring and more.
